Thief River Falls Airplane Hangar

The City of Thief River Falls recently had a new 30,000 square foot airplane hangar constructed. Being the third busiest freight airport in the state they needed to expand to support the growing business.  It is a project that has been years in the making. H+U was the construction manager on the hangar, and they used SwedeBro near the end of the project to apply the epoxy flooring.

An airplane hangar such as this requires exceptionally durable epoxy flooring to withstand heavy traffic and provide protection from caustic materials. This ensures safe storage and a working environment for expensive aviation equipment. Many people worked diligently to bring this project to fruition and epoxy flooring is one aspect in protecting the city’s investment.

SwedeBro applied Sherwin-Williams Airplane Hangar system at this new facility. This flooring system is extremely durable, long-lasting, and abrasion-resistant. It will hold up to heavy planes, machinery, and other aviation equipment needed to maintain or unload an aircraft. It also has excellent resistance to chemicals commonly found in the aviation industry. This includes oils, hydraulic fluid, and extremely caustic jet fuel, which can deteriorate a surface, but with the appropriate high-solids polyurethane coating, this will not be an issue for this customer. In addition, the smooth, glossy finish makes spills easy to clean.

Good visibility and cleanability are vital in the aviation industry. This highly reflective coating brightens the hangar, improving visibility and making it safer for personnel to work. Parts or fluids that fall on the floor need to be easily identified so they do not cause any damage to planes.

The application process takes one week to complete. Shotblasting and edge grinding is standard prep for epoxy flooring and it provides the profile that bonds the epoxy to the floor for years. This project specification called for a 100% solids primer with sand to bind and build the system. This was followed by another application coat of 100% solids epoxy, and lastly, the system was finished with a high-solids polyurethane coating. After installation is complete, the system requires 24 hours of curing for foot traffic and a full 3 days for complete cure.

Given the high volume of people, planes, and packages moving through the new hangar, it is imperative that the facility be constructed to the highest standards of efficiency. Epoxy flooring airplane hangar systems are the ideal choice for long-lasting durability, ease of cleanability, and chemical resistance. These performance characteristics will make this a safer environment for all and will last the city for years as they continue to grow their business.
